# Skylights

A skylight is a hole in your roof with glass in it, so the flashing around it matters as much as the unit. Most skylight leaks come from the flashing or the roofing around the opening, not from the glass itself. Skylight installation is part of our roofing work, so the same crew that cuts the opening handles the framing, the flashing and the shingles or roofing around it. That means one company is responsible for the whole detail. We can add a skylight to an existing roof or include one when we replace a roof, which is often the cleanest time to do it. If you already have a skylight that leaks or fogs, call us. We will look at the flashing and the roof around it and tell you whether it needs a repair or a new unit. For a new skylight, we will talk through where it fits on the roof and what the inside of the house will need.

## Common questions

Can a skylight be added to an existing roof?

Usually, yes. We look at the rafters, the roof pitch and the attic space before we cut anything, and we will explain what the installation involves.

Is it better to add a skylight during a roof replacement?

It is often easier, because the roofing is already being opened up and the flashing can be built into the new roof. It is not required, though.

My skylight leaks. Do I need a new one?

Not always. Many leaks come from worn flashing or roofing around the skylight. We will inspect it and tell you what is failing.
